When a windshield needs replacing instead of repairing

Not every chip means a new windshield. Small chips can often be repaired with resin. Replacement is usually the right call when:

• A crack is too long to repair, or it keeps growing
• The damage is directly in the driver's line of sight, where even a good repair can leave a blemish
• The chip or crack is at the edge of the glass, where it tends to spread
• There are several chips or cracks across the glass
• The glass is pitted or sandblasted enough to cause glare at night

Why proper installation matters

A windshield isn't just a window. It's bonded to the vehicle's body with urethane adhesive and helps the cabin hold its shape, and in many vehicles the passenger airbag deploys against it. That's why the old adhesive has to be properly removed, the frame prepared, and the new glass set and bonded correctly, not just dropped in.

The adhesive also needs time to cure before the vehicle is driven. How long depends on the adhesive and on the weather, which matters in Edmonton when temperatures drop.

What happens during a windshield replacement

1. We confirm the right windshield for your vehicle, including any camera bracket, rain sensor or heating features.
2. Mouldings, wipers and trim around the glass are removed, and the interior and paint are protected.
3. The old windshield is cut out and the old adhesive trimmed back.
4. The frame is cleaned and prepared so the new adhesive bonds properly.
5. The new windshield is set in place and bonded.
6. Mouldings, wipers, mirror and sensors are reinstalled and the glass is cleaned.
7. You're told how long to wait before driving, and whether your camera needs calibration.

After your new windshield

For the first day or so, it's common advice to:

• Wait the full cure time before driving
• Avoid slamming doors and leave a window open slightly if you can
• Skip high-pressure and automatic car washes
• Leave any retaining tape on until you're told to remove it

Windshield cameras and ADAS calibration

Many newer vehicles have a forward camera mounted behind the windshield for features like lane-keeping assist, lane departure warning and automatic emergency braking. When the windshield is replaced, the manufacturer may require that camera to be recalibrated so it's aimed correctly. Not every vehicle needs it. Read about ADAS calibration.
