What is ADAS?
ADAS stands for Advanced Driver Assistance Systems: the safety and convenience features that use cameras and sensors to help you drive. Depending on the vehicle, these can include:
- Lane departure warning and lane-keeping assist
- Automatic emergency braking and forward collision warning
- Adaptive cruise control
- Automatic high beams
- Traffic sign recognition
- Rain-sensing wipers
Many of these rely on a forward-facing camera mounted at the top of the windshield, near the rear-view mirror, looking out through the glass.
Why a new windshield can affect these systems
The camera has to be aimed precisely to judge where lane lines, vehicles and obstacles are. When the windshield is replaced, the camera is removed and reinstalled on the new glass, and small differences in the glass or mounting position can change where it's pointing.
Calibration re-aligns the camera to the vehicle manufacturer's specification so the system reads the road the way it was designed to.
What calibration involves
Manufacturers specify how their cameras are calibrated. In general there are two approaches, and some vehicles need one, the other, or both:
Static calibration
Done with the vehicle parked, using targets placed at set distances and heights in front of it, following the manufacturer's procedure.
Dynamic calibration
Done by driving the vehicle under specified conditions, such as set speeds on roads with clear lane markings, while the system recalibrates itself with a scan tool connected.
Which method your vehicle needs depends on the make, model and year.
When calibration may be needed
- After a windshield replacement on a vehicle with a windshield-mounted camera
- When a warning light or message for a driver-assist feature comes on
- After some other repairs, such as a wheel alignment or collision work, depending on the manufacturer
Not every vehicle with a new windshield needs calibration. It depends on the equipment and what the manufacturer requires.
What to ask after a windshield replacement
- Does my vehicle have a camera or sensor on the windshield?
- Does the manufacturer require calibration after replacement?
- Which type of calibration does my vehicle need?
- How will I know the calibration was completed?
