Why repair a chip early
A chip is a small break in the outer layer of the windshield. On its own it might not look like much, but it's a weak point. Temperature swings put stress on the glass: a cold morning and a hot defroster, a warm afternoon and a cold night. That's how a small chip turns into a crack running across the windshield.
Edmonton's winters make this worse. Once a chip becomes a long crack, repair usually isn't an option any more and the windshield has to be replaced.
Can your chip be repaired?
Every chip is different, but as a general guide a chip is more likely to be repairable when:
- It's small, roughly coin-sized or smaller
- It isn't directly in the driver's line of sight
- It isn't right at the edge of the windshield
- It hasn't already spread into a long crack
- It's been kept fairly clean and dry
Replacement is usually needed when the damage is large, has cracked out, sits in the driver's view, or is at the edge. Send a photo or call and we'll tell you which it is.
How rock chip repair works
- The chip is inspected and cleaned out.
- Air and moisture are drawn out of the break.
- A clear resin is injected to fill the damage.
- The resin is cured, then the surface is finished smooth.
A repair is designed to stop the chip spreading and make it much less noticeable. It won't always disappear completely, and a faint mark can remain depending on the chip.
What to do until it's repaired
- Cover the chip with clear tape to keep out dirt and water
- Go easy on the defroster and avoid blasting hot air on cold glass
- Avoid car washes and slamming doors
- Get it looked at soon: the longer it's left, the more likely it spreads
