Most side windows and rear windows are made of tempered glass. Tempered glass is built to break into small, blunt pieces instead of sharp shards, which is safer, but it also means it can't be patched. Once it breaks, the whole window is replaced.

A proper side window replacement is more than dropping in new glass. Broken glass tends to end up inside the door panel and all over the interior, so it needs to be cleaned out before the new window goes in and is checked for smooth up-and-down movement.

Sunroof glass replacement

Sunroof glass can crack from a rock strike, a hard temperature swing or stress in the panel. Because it's usually tempered, a cracked sunroof panel is replaced rather than repaired.

Until it's replaced, keep the sunroof closed and covered if the glass is broken, so rain and snow stay out of the headliner. Call with your vehicle details and we'll confirm the replacement panel for your model.

Why the windshield is different

Your windshield is laminated glass, two layers of glass with a plastic layer between them, and it's bonded to the body of the vehicle with adhesive. That's why a small chip can sometimes be repaired, and why a replacement has to be installed properly: the windshield helps the cabin keep its shape, and in many vehicles the passenger airbag deploys against it.

Many newer vehicles also have a camera mounted behind the windshield for lane-keeping or automatic braking. If yours does, a new windshield may mean the camera needs ADAS calibration.
